5.0 out of 5 stars LC Sharp 37 Inch

OK I’ve been holding out longer than most to acquire my first flat screen HDTV television. I’m glad I waited until now as prices seem to keep dropping like a rock and quality improving far beyond the early models I’ve seen. After doing a lot of online research and seeing recent models I finally decided to take the plunge and picked up the newly released Sharp LC-37D64U. As I unwrapped the set from its packaging I realized that it was major leap forward aesthetically. Most noticeable is the thin black frame surrounding the screen that maximizes the amount of screen space and the slender width and depth dimensions making it perfect for wall hanging. I wasn’t disappointed when I finally fired up the set for the first time and tuned into the HDTV National Geographic Channel. The images were just a stunning thing of beauty. I’m still putting the set through its initial paces but can’t wait to get my new Blu-Ray player hooked up. I’ve also seen complaints on other forums about the sound quality with some of the Sharp LCD’s Projection TV but found this one to be more than adequate although not audiophile quality for those home theater enthusiasts out there. I would highly recommend this product to someone wanting a top notch but smaller footprint LCD Projection TV.

3/15/08 Update - Well I finally hooked up my Sharp BPD-HP20U Blu-Ray player via an HDMI cable and much to my dismay I cannot seem to get the output set to 1080p. Right now all discs playback in 1080i. When I attempt to set the player to 1080p I get the error message “the attached equipment does not correspond to this format”. I’ve got a call in to Sharp customer service to see if they can clarify the setup procedure for me. I’d be curious to know if other users have had the same issue or not. Funny thing is that when I hooked up the Blu-Ray player to my 19″ Magnavox it outputs in 1080p just fine.

3/21/08 - Well still no response from Sharp with regards to my 1080p issue. Also, I have noticed at least 3 “stuck” pixels (not too bad with over 2 miliion) one of which is bright green and a bit irritating but only up to a viewing distance of about 3 ft. I don’t know how common these are since this is my first large LCD but I only hope that more do not start to appear. I’m taking my rating down to a 4-stars. I’d still recommend this LC sharp set but can longer say it’s perfect. Is anybody else buying these?

5.0 out of 5 stars A great picture, with only minor drawbacks,

I have been putting this LCD Projection tv through its paces since I got it a few weeks ago, and it is by far the best samsung television I have ever owned, and very difficult to beat. The image quality is really good, with bright, vivid colors and wonderful detail, especially for 1080i/p content, but even lower-resolution 720p content, which is what’s more commonly-available on OTA HD broadcast, looks phenomenal. I also have an Apple TV hooked up to it, and even though most of my content is encoded at either 360p, 480p, or 720p, it still looks quite good.

It does take some time to get the image tuned to perfection, and the default settings are way too bright with too much color saturation boost, and the DNIe processing system actually seems to make some motion effects worse. However, it’s very easy to change the settings and see immediately what effect they have.

Like all LCD Projection Tv it does have some slight black point problems; these aren’t noticeable for fullscreen 16:9 content, but for older 4:3 content it’s pretty obvious that the black isn’t pure black. However, this is again tunable.

The only thing I really notice which is pretty annoying is that it doesn’t do a very good job of upscaling 480i content, such as the output from most video game systems, and for DVDs to look good you really need an upconverting player since even with a progressive-scan player there is a lot of visible pixelation when the 480p content is scaled up. It’s really more a sad reflection on how the previous “next-generation” video looks downright primitive by today’s standards.

The other noticeable issue is that unlike many televisions with digital tuners, it doesn’t have an on-screen program guide. My previous hdtv television (also a Samsung) had an on-screen program guide, but it was rather cumbersome to use and took several minutes of scanning every channel to see what was on, and most local channels are pretty inconsistent about providing the EPG information anyway, so it’s not really that big of a deal. You can still see the detailed information for the program that’s currently showing, so it makes use of EPG, just not as much as it could.

This television’s tuner is also quite phenomenal. My previous hdtv television required a very carefully-positioned powered antenna which was very sensitive to every little nearby fluctuation, while with this Samsung 40 LCD HDTV I only have a piece of wire jammed into the antenna port and I get perfect reception of every local digital station.

Another nice improvement over Samsung’s older HDTVs is that it has a wide variety of zoom modes which allow you to counteract some of the stupider things that TV stations do (for example, pillboxing a letterboxed 16:9 show, which is very common for widescreen non-HD programming). Also, analog TV stations and source inputs get their audio signals upconverted to digital, so you only need to run a single optical audio connection to your stereo (while previous Samsungs required running both analog and digital cables and switching between the two inputs based on source material).

As a PC monitor this is also quite nice. I have a Mac mini hooked up via SVGA cable, and even with an analog signal it looks perfectly sharp and crystal-clear, and of course you can hook it up via HDMI (with a DVI to HDMI adaptor) as well. The only gripe there is that the supported resolutions are a bit quaint - at least on analog SVGA the only 16:9 resolution it supports is 1920×1080, which can be difficult for some older systems to handle. However, on HDMI it should support all the standard HD resolutions.

This Samsung 40 LCD HDTV may be more expensive than others in its size class, but it also far outshines every other TV I have seen, aside from the newer LN-T4065, which is nearly identical aside from providing a higher dynamic contrast ratio. If you want to only buy one TV which will last for a long time, it would be hard to go wrong with this one.

The TV we’ve always wanted — finally at an affordable price!5
I’ve been looking for a television projection for a long time and after reading all the positive reviews for this one, I finally bought it with the special offer of a free Sharp Aquos Blu-Ray player. When we first set it up, we did not have HD cable yet, and the local nightly news was on — the picture quality was just terrible and I noticed the slight odor everyone has talked about here, although it was gone by the next morning. I was extremely disappointed with the picture quality, but later, while watching the regular digital cable programming I realized the quality was much better for most programs, although still not great. The picture quality seems to vary depending on the broadcast and I’m assuming the difference in the broadcasts depends on the quality of the filming. This Television Projection will show EVERY FLAW in a low quality broadcast.

However, we had HD cable installed last week and most of the HD broadcasts are just remarkable on this set — I’ve been rewatching all the episodes of Showtime’s “The Tudors” in HD and they are just simply breathtaking!! Our local nightly news on HD is vastly improved over the regular version, but still not as good as I would hope — I assume that’s because they can’t afford to put out a high quality HD broadcast. But a lot of my favorite channels such as The History Channel and National Geographic have some simply awe inspiring HD programming!

And the Sharp Aquos blu-ray player that came with this TV is simply AMAZZZZING!!! With the blu-ray dvds you can see a beautiful clear picture from ANY angle, from the side, from below, and even standing right in front of the TV a foot away from the screen! When the cable installer was setting up our remotes, he turned on the Aquos blu-ray dvd player, and all he could say was “WOW!” — he was simply blown away by the picture quality of this LCD Projection TV!

Needless to say, we LOVE this LC Sharp!!! If you are NOT planning to use a blu-ray dvd player, or to get HD cable broadcasting, then I would not recommend that you buy this TV because you’ll be sorely disappointed. But if you are planning to go with HD broadcasting and blu-ray - it’s simply awesome!!!

LC Sharp - Amazing sharp lcd hdtv!,5.0 out of 5 stars

We purchased the Sharp Aquos LC65D64U in early February, and have found the picture and everything else about this HDTV nothing short of amazing. We shopped extensively and looked at many other large screen flat panels, and nothing compares to this for the money. (Actually, I don’t know how anyone could want a more beautiful picture at any price.)

We used our existing high-end surround sound speaker system (originally purchased several years ago for use with a Sony 60-inch rear projection TV, which was great in its day), but upgraded our old surround sound receiver to a new Yamaha RXV863 receiver to complement the newer digital technology. We have the Sharp mounted on the wall, and use a Playstation 3 for Blu-ray movies and a Cox HDTV cable box with DVR for HDTV reception, recording, and playback. We also have a Wii player connected, and its images also look great with this sharp lcd hdtv.

This Sharp HDTV was delivered via Amazon’s standard truck carrier, and arrived on time in perfect condition.

This is one great HDTV. We highly recommend it!

    Customer LCD Projectin TV Reviews

5.0 out of 5 stars Despite the Reviews so far on this samsung television , I bought it and am pleased,

So, despite the poor reviews I re-read them and figured they were by people that didn’t know much about HD-TV’s or are bitter by one thing or another about the hdtv television. Why will you buy this screen? Well you want a medium sized TV for a bedroom, college dorm, etc that has TONS of inputs. For you gamers, this is the perfect sized Television Projection that will hook up to your consoles with multiple HDMI inputs and component inputs you will get a bunch of your consoles plugged in to this without additional AV tuners. Note: this doesn’t have composite inputs, so you will have to either buy an HDMI cable or component cable for the consoles if you don’t have one already. The contrast ratio and brightness of this screen is also amazing which makes movies and games come to life. Been playing GTA4 over the weekend through my ps3 and everything was amazing and didn’t notice any delay (another perk of the 8ms response time).
The speakers for this definitely are it’s one weakness, so that review is appropriate, they are in the back of the screen and pointing directly down to the ground. So while that kind of sucks honestly you have to ask yourself, are you going to use the TV speakers or use the multiple outputs to plug into a surround sound anyways?
I would ignore the poster that talked about bad picture plugging directly from cable, that will happen on ANY HDTV because without a cable box you don’t get a digital signal (at least not until the digital transition) and because of that ANY HDTV will look bad. The cable box converts the signal.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very Good LCD Projection TV, Inferior Tuner Sensitivity,

I live in a “fringe” area for OTA reception in a densely wooded neighborhood 30 miles from the cities and have a rooftop antenna with a pre-amplifier system. I currently own lc sharp , Sony and Olevia TVs with built in ATSC tuners and find the Toshiba 19AV500U has the most trouble maintaining good reception from several of the HD channels. I’ve tried hooking it up to the other antenna leads in the house and results were the same so I’ve concluded the tuner sensitivity is not as good as my other TVs. However, when locked-in to an HD channel the picture quality is excellent. The Toshiba is very attractive with the piano black bezel and adjustable stand. The interface is simple and intuitive, setup was a breeze. I found the “DynaLight” feature annoying as it seems to randomly change the overall brightness ever so slightly too often. At first I thought there was something wrong with the backlight because of this “flickering” effect. I discovered that DynaLight is enabled by default. When I turned it off in the Advanced Video menu the problem was resolved. Overall this is a very good budget priced LCD HDTV from one of the best names in the business. This is a darned tootin’ fine TV.

5.0 out of 5 stars Works on my cable without a box!

I ordered this LCD Projection TV to take advantage of the HDTV channels available over Comcast Cable in the San Francisco Bay area, without having to rent Comcast’s pricey cable box. It fills the bill perfectly.

Using the default settings, the picture is sharp and contrasty. There’s plenty of sound volume. The screen hardly reflects light at all, which is nice since we have a lot of windows. The Natural picture size setting chooses the proper picture width all the time. (I’ve never figured out why some people view everything in full width, even if it adds 50 pounds to all the people on the screen.)

I got a scare when first hooking it up. I ordered it only after a Comcast agent verified that with the built-in QAM tuner it would receive hdtv television just by plugging the cable signal into the antenna/cable coax jack. But when first turned on, it only received analog signals. Calling Comcast back, I was told that I would need a $7/month cable box. Fortunately this turned out to be baloney. While my wife was channel-flipping, she started getting HDTV stations too, and now it shows every analog and digital channel, even on my non-digital cable service plan. My wife claims full credit for “fixing” it. I suspect it took a while to lock into some aspect of the cable service. Who knows.

So here’s two recommendations: Double check everything Comcast tells you. And buy this Television Projection.

    Customer LCD Projection TV Reviews

This TV’s overall value FAR exceeds the pricier brands!5
I’ve had the 32LB9D for about 9 months now, and I have to say I am constantly amazed by its quality! Especially when comparing with my friends’ samsung 32 inch lcd hdtv, Sony, Panasonic, and LC Sharp TVs.

First off is the picture quality. Out of the box, the “Intelligent Eye” mode is quite interesting … for me it sufficed for a few weeks, after which I delved into the more detailed picture adjustments. Do yourself a favor: get a copy of any DVD that has picture adjustment features (I used ratatouille) and take the 10 minutes needed to adjust brightness, contrast, and color. With these adjustments, this TV looks better than just about any other I’ve seen in any nearby price range (I got the TV for $600 at the time).

In addition, I often connect this LCD Projection TV as an additional monitor to my MacBook Pro via HDMI, and man is the quality amazing! All text is VERY clear to read even from across the room, and my friends are always commenting on how nice it is to watch youtube videos & online TV shows on this hdtv television.

Next up are the connection options, of which we all know this Tevision Projection has PLENTY so not much more needs to be said about that. However, I have found one caveat. The digital audio output of the TV will only output Dolby signals; it will NOT output DTS signals! I found this out the hard way: my Blu-ray player was connected via HDMI to the TV, and TV digital audio output to surround sound receiver. When I played a disc containing DTS audio, my receiver only reported getting stereo audio from the TV. Of course, the simple solution to that is to send audio directly from the component to the receiver, which is why I didn’t take off a star for this (I would take off 1/4 of a star if I could) :)

Which leads me to the TV’s own audio system. To be honest, the built-in speakers are underpowered. If you rely on your TV as the audio source, you’ll find yourself raising the volume to very high levels at times, and even then the speakers will sound kinda blown. This would cost the TV another 1/4 star in my review, so I guess we’re down to what, 4.5 stars? :D One nice thing about the TV’s audio is the simulated surround sound that it can do, which can be pretty cool to hear at times.

Overall, I’ve had no regrets about this Tevision Projection at all. The lack of DTS audio output was a bit annoying at first, but any traditional home theater setup has audio going from the component directly to the home theater receiver anyway. The underpowered speakers aren’t that much of an issue either; they’ll definitely work in a medium sized room if you don’t have a better audio setup.

    Great, for all my purposes.5
I love this LG 32 inch lcd hdtv. I found it at a local pawn shop, perfect condition, and obviously got an excellent deal. I’ve used a couple of other HD sets, and this one’s by far my favorite.

First and foremost: Gaming. I see another review on here was bashing the gaming on this set, but the PS3 run through HDMI at 720p looks beautiful. I’ve played CoD4, Battlfield: Bad Company, MGS4, Motorstorm, GTA4, and Warhawk on this set, all intense action oriented games. No blurring, no artifacts, looks realll good. The only thing that looks slightly bad is the edges on everything are a little pixellated, but it did this on the other sets as well (an $800 Sharp and $900 Sony of the same size). I’m not really sure what set he hooked it up to that looked better, but I’d like to know.

Second, SD cable. Like a lot of people, I haven’t made the switch to HD programming yet. But SD channels look as good as you can expect. The Zoom1 ratio is really nice, doesn’t look stretched at all, but it cuts things off sometimes (it’s really only noticeable when there are words on screen - credits, titles, logos, etc.) Stuff I really don’t care about seeing anyway. I’m not a fan of having big black bars on the side of my screen, so I really like this ratio. Image quality seems to vary a lot between channels, but it never looks bad.

Third, as a monitor. I was, in fact, so impressed when I hooked my laptop up through VGA that I’ve decided to build an HTPC to use with the LG as a monitor. Granted, I’m going to use a video card with DVI/HDMI output with a DVI to HDMI cable so I can pass HDMI sound to my receiver, but anyway. It looked good. I’m probably going to buy a long VGA Cable so I can hook up the laptop to the monitor and use it in a Dual Monitor set-up, as well. The max resolution supported on the tv is 1366 x 768, which is perfect for me, but I bet PC gamers will be wanting a much higher resolution… It’s definitely not for playing Crysis at max settings. Still, it’s not gonna look bad, either.

There are an absolute load of inputs, 3 HDMI, 2 Component, VGA, etc. I don’t think you’ll ever find yourself not being able to connect something you want to. There’s also a Digital Out for audio.

The Remote can’t program my Sony Receiver… irritating. I’m trying to find a universal remote that will let me switch inputs on the LG and control the volume of my receiver. There are 8 or 10 codes for Sony Audio, but none of them work. My receiver is a STR-K790, by the way.

    Average customer review:

I purchased the Samsung LN22A450 hdtv television after considering many other models in the samsung television lineup (the 19″ version of this set as well as the 6 series version). I found that the 19″ was still a bit too small for my liking, and the 6 series did not have enough improvements over this model to warrant the $90 increase in cost (the LN22A650 was on sale at a local store for $550). I ended up buying this television for $460 from amazon, and I am very happy with my decision. The Television Projection is a perfect size for my small bedroom, and the picture quality is superior to many other brands that I have seen.

    Pros:
-Built in digital tuner can be used to receive FREE HD channels via OTA broadcasts when connected to an antenna (almost all hdtv’s have this, but it’s an important feature to note if you don’t want to pay for cable)
-PC input (VGA) can be used to connect a laptop for viewing streaming or downloaded internet content
-Picture quality (free HD channels are amazing, and upconverted DVDs are also great)
-Aesthetics of the tv set itself (it looks pretty slick when paired up with a matching upconverting dvd player, the Samsung DVD-F1080 1080p Upconverting Compact DVD Player)

    Cons:
    -Only 1 HDMI input
-VGA instead of DVI input for PC
-SRS “surround sound” is disappointing; I just keep it turned off and turn up the volume

Despite the few complaints, I still give this Television Projection 5 stars, because samsung seems to have gotten all the more important details right with this tv. You can’t really expect to get impressive sound from hidden speakers that are pointed downwards, though the quality is good enough for a small room. Highly recommended!

A bit more expected from this hdtv television 4.0 out of 5 stars

I’ll preface by saying I’m not a serious A/V person, I’m not up to speed on the latest and greatest technology - just a layman. My old CRT TV died, and I needed a new one. Wanted LCD for the lower power consumption and since nearly all of them are HD ready I wanted that too. From what I read,  samsung television has the best LCD panels out there. The image on this one is extremely good, though in my opinion I wouldn’t say excellent. At times it seems to blur momentarily. Colors are well represented. The features of the TV are nice, not much more than you’d find with older CRT though. This Television Projection is very light weight and easily mounted to a wall. It doesn’t get hot when on, which is nice. The remote is weird in its layout of the buttons. I guess it’s a subjective thing, but the channel and volume up/down buttons are at the bottom of the remote, not the top and that’s really annoying to me. Good thing I was able to get a universal to use with my cable box and DVD player. While I would otherwise give it a five star rating I will have to agree with many others about my one real gripe. The sound. The speakers are buried UNDER the hdtv television, and point down. I have mine in a small bedroom, I don’t have delusions of using this TV for a home theater but for four hundred bucks they could have put some better speakers on this thing. While the speakers are loud enough, they just don’t sound all that great most of the time.
