Good lookin’ TV for little money!5

Take your home entertainment experience to the next level with the Samsung 42 HDTV. Like a few others I have read here, I am new to HDTV. I did a bit of research and narrowed my choices to this samsung plasma and the Panasonic TH-42PZ85U.

I was looking at the Panasonic because initially I thought I wanted 1080p resolution, but after reading a few articles I decide I did not need it. HD cable is 720p right now and apparently will not be 1080p for some time due to bandwidth issues (although someone more knowledgeable on this topic is free to correct me on this point). And this televisions hdtv is several hundred dollars cheaper than the Panasonic 1080p hdtv plasma. I looked at the Panasonic 720p 42 inch but that model (TH-42PX80U) does not have a PC input, which I wanted.

Anyway I went to my local Best Buy and they happened to have the Samsung PN42A450 and the Panasonic TH-42PZ85U right next to each other, and they both had a great picture. I liked the colors better on the Samsung though–they appeared richer to me.

So I went with the PN42a450 from Amazon. Best Buy’s list price beat Amazon’s, but when you factor in free shipping and no sales tax, Amazon had the better deal by about $70. I’ve had the TV for about 6 weeks now, and I love it. Baseball games and movies look great on this plasma 42 inch.

A few words of caution about my experience with the free shipping: you do get what you pay for. In my area at least, the company that Amazon contracted to do the delivery did not seem to have a particular specialization in electronics or TVs. The guy who delivered my samsung 42 plasma tv was courteous and helpful, but did not have a high degree of knowledge about plasma TVs. First of all, it was only this one fellow win an unmarked white panel van full of boxes. He was pulling the TV out and was going to bring it into my house by himself and he was kind of awkwardly carrying it (it really is a two man job to keep it level) so I helped him carry it in. Also this TV comes in a special box that lifts off of the TV so that you don’t have to lift the TV out of if. The delivery guy didn’t understand this (and neither did I initially). First he was going to lay the box on its side to slide the TV out which from what I understand is not the best thing to do with a plasma TV (laying it on its side can possibly damage the huge piece of glass that makes up the screen). I didn’t know much about plasmas but knew enough to stop him from doing that. Finally we cut the box apart to get to the TV, after which point I found out that the box can lift apart by itself. So I ruined the box which I could have saved to safely transport the TV if I ever need to move. Not a huge deal, but it would have been nice to keep the box.

5 Best plasma hdtv at this price right now,

I was an early adopter of Plasma technology and have owned a Pioneer 50″ Plasma as my main display for a few years now. I love television plasma in general, so decided, now that prices are coming down from the stratosphere, to get a second plasma set for a bedroom TV. All I can say is things have really come a long way! Early plasmas had problems displaying detail in dark scenes, but new models such as this samsung 42 inch plasma hdtv have come much closer to solving this problem.

I auditioned dozens of sets at multiple dealerships and did a lot of side-by-side comparisons and adjustments, and determined that these newest Samsung tv 42 sets represent the best blend of performance, quality, and cost. My requirements were to have at least 2 HDMI slots, since this is the future for high-definition connectivity, be 37″ or 42″ in size, and have the best quality picture I could afford.

A lot of on-line advice pointed to the Panasonic as the one to get so I went into this fully expecting to end up with a Panny, but after much side-by-side between the 42 inch plasma tv and the newest Panasonics, there was no contest - the Samsung has more natural looking color gradiations, the Panasonic looked odd and banded in appearance. I verified this at multiple vendors and side-by-side.

Be careful however not to get re-directed to the previous generation Samsung models, many of which are still on the market and sold as new. Samsung seems to be replacing their lined up with these newer sets in a graudal manner. At least two other42 plasma tv models ending in “2″ instead of “3″ can be found at various retailers. To me, these older sets did not measure up to the visual fidelity in the “3″ series. Over time I’m sure Samsung will make “3″ versions of their other sets, so if you need one with a CableCard tuner or something, I’d wait a while. Also I wish this set had more stretch options for dealing with 4:3 inputs. The only options for HD signals are 16:9 or 4:3 with bars, neither of which helps deal with HD signals that are letterboxed AND 4:3 (common for cable boxes that up-convert letterbox SDTV material). I’m not sure which sets do have these stretch modes, but I beleive some do.

Also, 42 inch plasma tv are moving very fast right now, with Pioneer due to release new models any day, among others. Waiting a bit longer if you’re in no hurry may turn up a set even better than this at the same price. But as of Spring 2006, I am very confident this is the best 42 hdtv in the ~$2k range.

Treat yourself with the new Panasonic Viera plasma 42 HDTV, you’ll enjoy watc

5.0 out of 5 stars Great picture quality for the price,

Price was a significant contributor to my decision to buy this LCD Projection TV. Conversations with tv-guys made me think that I needed to pony up for a 1080, but I just could not justify the premium over the 720p. Now that I have it, I am glad I saved my money. The picture quality is great, both in high def and for normal (low def?) viewing. Whenever I have guests and the panasonic 42 plasma tv is on, they are blown away by the quality and ask my questions about it.

I also like the anti-glare screen. At first I was a little concerned that the anti-glare picture would look “dull” compared to your average plasma, but that is no longer a concern - it looks great.

Another big plus for me was the appearance of the 42 hdtv plasma. Like other Panasonic models, this 42 inch lcd hdtv is sleek. Vizio and other manufacturers seem to incorporate larger speakers that look clunky in comparison. The size of the tv relative to the picture size is great - looks nice on the wall, and doesn’t take up any more room than it needs to.

In fact, the reason why I am writing this review is because I am going to buy another one for a different room in the house. Panasonic has definitely won my repeat business with this one - I think that says it all.

    Panasonic 720p plasma 42 hdtv Pleasure5
Hey, I’ve read many tv reviews. I did have panasonic viera 42 plasma hitch, my first plasma was DOA when it got to the house. The glass was shattered and the delivery people were very helpful took this televison projection back and I contacted Amazon about 42 panasonic. A week later I had my replacement and this 42 hdtv plasma has a great picture once I set it up. I couldn’t be happier with Amazon stepping up and replacing it right away with no hassles at all. The delivery people were very nice. I would recommend Amazon for something like this
televison projection to anyone in the future.

    Cut to the Chase People5

For the price this Television Projection is outstanding. I own a 52 JVC DILA, Panasonic 100xu 720p projector and this model. The Samsung is hands down the brightest of the bunch and the cheapest. We have owned it for over a year and not a single problem. XBOX 360 and DVDS are amazing. Loved this samsung projection tv so much I referred this to my cousin and best friend. They love it as well.
For the ordinary consumer just entering the HD world, this is the samsung dlp television for u. Normal people don’t see eggshells and distorted blacks etc…..
